Poor Conan

By now I’m sure you’ve heard – NBC is changing up their late night schedule and moving The Jay Leno Show to 11:35pm, and pushing The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien to 12:05am (thus, shifting Jimmy Fallon’s timeslot as well).

How could NBC not have known that putting Leno at 10 p.m. five nights a week was a bad idea! That’s five hour-long scripted programs that they aren’t showing. That’s a lot of advertising dollars when you do the math – five different shows versus just one Leno! And now, Conan may be paying the price.

Well, dear readers, rest assured: The Littlest Winslow is on Team Conan. I loved his version of Late Night, and The Tonight Show is just as good, if not better.

Conan isn’t taking this BS lying down though. He recently (and finally!) released a statement, telling the “People of Earth” that: “I cannot express in words how much I enjoy hosting this program and what an enormous personal disappointment it is for me to consider losing it. My staff and I have worked unbelievably hard and we are very proud of our contribution to the legacy of the Tonight Show. But I cannot participate in what I honestly believe is its destruction. Some people will make the argument that with DVRs and the Internet a time slot doesn’t matter. But with the Tonight Show, I believe nothing could matter more.

There has been speculation about my going to another network but, to set the record straight, I currently have no other offer and honestly have no idea what happens next. My hope is that NBC and I can resolve this quickly so that my staff, crew, and I can do a show we can be proud of, for a company that values our work.”

He doesn’t want to move, and he doesn’t want to go anywhere else. You have to hand it to him – he respects the legacy of “The Tonight Show” and doesn’t want to fuck with it. Kudos, Conan! Leno should retire. He’s. Just. Not. Funny. Or maybe NBC should consider putting Leno on only once a week. Twice tops?

Whatever NBC decides, anything would be better than moving Conan out of his well-earned timeslot. He completely deserves it. Moving The Tonight Show would be such a Busch League move, NBC.

Watch Conan O’Brien’s monologue from January 11th, 2010. It’s not one to be missed!
